Cultural Considerations in Healthcare for Sexual Minority Women: Understanding Identity, Health, and Relationship Contexts

Sexual minority women represent a diverse and often underserved population in research and healthcare settings. Providing affirming, client-centered care requires a thorough understanding of the complexity of sexual identity, including the nuance between self-identity labels and behaviors, and how sexual and relational factors shape healthcare experiences. This training will present recent research and associated clinical considerations to provide affirming care to sexual minority women. Topics will present and challenge common myths and stereotypes, discuss patterns of healthcare (in)accessibility, and provide information on reproductive, relational, and sexual health concerns. Participants will learn practical strategies to assess sexual orientation, sexual behaviors, and relationship dynamics in order to enhance cultural competence and promote equitable care for this population.
